Transformation of Leading Ladies

Margot Robbie’s nomination for Best Actress in I, Tonya, is one of many examples of leading ladies known for their classic beauty and glamour that have resulted in Oscar nominations and/or wins as a result of portraying characters not considered physically attractive. But what these characters lack in stereotypical beauty, are made up in the strength and distinctive traits that shine through any makeup, as well as the talent behind them. Such contemporary onscreen portrayals include  Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted, Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables, Felicity Huffman in Transamerica, Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Salma Hayek in Frida, and Charlize Theron in Monster.
