Academy Award season often leaves many of us wilted in the wake of Hollywood’s judicious pruning of nominees from the garden of Oscar, and this year is no exception. Francophiles were furious as Oscar held back the love from James Franco (The Disaster Artist) for Best Actor. Two-time Best Director winner Steven Spielberg ( Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan) and back-to-back Best Actor winner Tom Hanks (Philadelphia and Forrest Gump) were also conspicuously absent from Oscar’s lineup for their work on The Post; as was Judi Dench for Best Actress (Victoria and Abdul). In the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories, Armie Hammer (Call Me by Your Name) and Holly Hunter (The Big Sick) were weeded out. Oscar’s omission of Wonder Woman, the third highest grossing film of 2017, left us all wondering.
